A practical, hands on course that gives your team the skills to support someone in crisis and provide ongoing mental health first aid. Learn how to spot early signs, offer calm guidance and build a more supportive, mentally healthy workplace where people feel safe and understood.
Our First Aid for Mental Health course gives participants the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to recognise the early signs of poor mental health, start supportive conversations and signpost colleagues towards appropriate help. The course helps create a more open, supportive workplace where mental wellbeing is taken seriously and individuals feel confident to offer initial support without stepping outside the boundaries of their role.
By investing in Mental Health First Aiders, organisations can help reduce stigma, encourage early intervention and promote a healthier, more resilient workforce.
This course is ideal for employers, managers and team leaders looking to improve wellbeing and mental health support within their organisation.
It is suitable for businesses of all sizes that want to appoint Mental Health First Aiders or develop a workplace culture where employees feel supported. The course is particularly valuable for HR professionals, supervisors, wellbeing champions and anyone who may be responsible for supporting colleagues experiencing mental health challenges.
No previous mental health training is required.
Our First Aid for Mental Health course is delivered through a combination of interactive presentations, facilitated discussions, realistic workplace scenarios and practical activities that encourage participation throughout.
Learners explore real-life situations they may encounter in the workplace, developing the confidence to recognise when someone may be struggling, begin supportive conversations and understand the importance of listening without judgement. Group activities and case studies help participants apply their learning in a safe and supportive environment while encouraging reflection on their own workplace.
Our experienced instructors create an open and respectful learning environment where participants feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics and asking questions
Participants are assessed continuously throughout the course through interactive activities, workplace scenarios, group discussion and instructor observation.
Where appropriate, learners will also complete short knowledge checks and quizzes to reinforce understanding and confirm learning outcomes.
Assessment is carried out by a qualified Skills Shop instructor who holds recognised teaching and assessing qualifications together with relevant occupational competence and experience in the subject area. This continuous assessment approach ensures participants develop both the knowledge and confidence required to support others appropriately.
Successful participants will receive a Skills Shop First Aid for Mental Health certificate, valid for three years.
Skills Shop certificates are issued in-house rather than through an external awarding organisation. We believe this allows us to invest in experienced instructors, high quality learning resources and practical workplace training rather than annual accreditation fees.
Unlike physical first aid training, there is currently no legal requirement for employers to appoint Mental Health First Aiders. However, under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers have a duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees, including their mental wellbeing. When selecting a training provider, organisations should consider the provider’s competence, instructor experience, quality assurance processes and the relevance of the training to their workplace.
