Our Manual Handling course combines instructor-led presentations with practical demonstrations, interactive exercises and realistic workplace scenarios.
Participants learn how to assess manual handling tasks, identify hazards and apply safe handling techniques before practising these skills using equipment and loads similar to those found in their own workplace. Discussions throughout the course encourage learners to consider alternative methods of working, reducing unnecessary lifting wherever possible.
Training is practical, engaging and designed to give participants the confidence to apply safer manual handling techniques immediately on their return to work.
Participants are assessed continuously throughout the course through practical exercises, workplace scenarios, instructor observation and group discussion.
Where appropriate, learners will also complete short quizzes and knowledge checks to reinforce understanding and confirm learning.
Assessment is carried out by a qualified Skills Shop instructor who holds recognised teaching and assessing qualifications together with relevant occupational competence and practical experience. This dynamic approach ensures participants can demonstrate both their understanding and practical ability in a supportive learning environment.
Successful participants will receive a Skills Shop Manual Handling certificate. We recommend refresher training every three years, or sooner where workplace activities, equipment or risks change significantly.
Skills Shop certificates are issued in-house rather than through an external awarding organisation. This enables us to invest in experienced instructors, practical workplace training and high-quality learning resources rather than annual accreditation fees.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess unavoidable manual handling activities and reduce the risk of injury. Providing appropriate training forms an important part of helping employees work safely and confidently.
