Gain the essential skills to save lives with our Basic Life Support training course. This comprehensive basic life support course covers critical techniques such as CPR, managing airway obstructions, and recovery position, along with practical defibrillator training for effective use of an AED. Perfect for workplaces, healthcare professionals, and community groups, our basic life support training ensures you're confident and prepared to respond in emergencies. Build your life-saving expertise with this essential, hands-on training.
Basic Life Support (BLS) equips participants with the essential skills needed to respond confidently when someone suffers a cardiac arrest or life threatening medical emergency. Through practical, hands on training, learners develop the confidence to recognise when someone needs immediate help, begin life-saving treatment and support them until the arrival of the emergency services.
Whether in the workplace or everyday life, this course empowers people to act quickly, calmly and effectively when every second matters.
This course is ideal for employers, managers and team leaders who want to equip their workforce with the confidence and practical skills to respond to life threatening emergencies.
It is particularly suited to organisations where staff may have a duty of care towards colleagues, customers, visitors or vulnerable people, including healthcare settings, care providers, education, leisure facilities, offices, hospitality and community organisations.
No previous first aid experience is required.
Our Basic Life Support course is delivered using a highly practical and interactive approach that encourages participation throughout.
Learners take part in instructor demonstrations, hands on practical exercises and realistic emergency scenarios using CPR manikins and training equipment. Participants are encouraged to work through situations they could realistically encounter in their own workplace, helping build confidence alongside practical ability.
Group discussion and guided feedback throughout the course ensure every participant understands not only the techniques being taught but also when and why they should be applied.
Participants are assessed continuously throughout the course using practical activities, realistic scenarios, instructor observation and group discussion rather than a single final assessment.
Where appropriate, learners may also complete short knowledge checks to confirm their understanding of the key principles covered during the training.
Assessment is carried out by a qualified Skills Shop instructor who holds recognised teaching and assessing qualifications, together with the relevant occupational competence and industry experience. This ensures participants receive professional guidance and constructive feedback throughout the course.
Successful participants will receive a Skills Shop certificate, valid for 3 years.
Basic Life Support skills can deteriorate over time, particularly where they are not used regularly. For this reason, annual refresher training is widely recognised as good practice to help maintain confidence, competence and the ability to respond effectively during an emergency.
Skills Shop certificates are issued in-house rather than through an external awarding organisation. This allows us to invest in experienced instructors, high quality equipment and practical learning experiences instead of annual accreditation fees.
When choosing a training provider, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises employers to select a competent provider based on the quality of the training, instructor experience, quality assurance processes and the suitability of the course for the workplace. There is no HSE approval or accreditation scheme for first aid training providers.
