Asthma

Asthma is caused by an inflammation to the airways especially the bronchi (small tubes which carry air in and out of the lungs).

When an irritant comes into contact with these (trigger) the airways narrow and the muscles surrounding them tighten causing an increase in the production go phlegm.

This makes it difficult to breathe causing wheezing and coughing. It also makes their chest feel tight.

Examples of triggers include smoke, vapes, perfume and cold air.

Signs:

  • Difficultly in breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Distress and anxiety
  • Grey / blue skin tones
  • May become exhausted
  • Coughing

TREATMENT

  • inhalerSit them down and reassure them
  • Get them to concentrate on slow deep breathe
  • Allow them to use their own inhaler

Dial 999 / 112 if:

  • If it’s their first attack
  • They cannot talk
  • No signs of improvement

Remember, if they get too tired you can administer the inhaler for them. Discharge all dosages while you wait.

An inhaler contains medication like salbutamol which is bronchial dilator.  You cannot overdose on it.
