Poisoning happens when a substance damages your cells and organs.

Some substances are only poisonous if a large amount is consumed. For example overdosing.

A poison can enter the body in numerous ways:

• Swallowed Food, alcohol, drugs etc…
• Absorbed Chemicals, vapours, through the skin
• Injected Drugs, medicine, stings etc…
• Inhaled Gases, fumes etc…
• Instilled Into the eye e.g. chemicals or alcohol

GENERAL TREATMENT

• Call for an ambulance immediately
• Place into the safe airway position
• Keep any evidence of the poison
• Monitor breathing and be prepared to perform CPR

INDUSTRIAL POISONING

Signs of corrosive chemicals and gases include:

• Burning sensation in the airway and skin
• Breathing difficulties
• Burns around the body
• Possible coughing and sneezing
• Nausea and vomiting
• Severe headache and disorientation
• Unresponsive.

TREATMENT

• Call for an ambulance immediately
• Protect yourself
• Remove the casualty from the source into fresh air
• Treat for any burns
• Place them into the safe airway position if breathing
• If not, commence CPR
