Sickle Cell Anaemia

This is a genetic blood disorder where red blood cells develop abnormally.

These blood cells carry oxygen around the body but because they are almond shaped rather than oval, they cannot carry enough oxygen and are prone to die prematurely.

Because the body doesn’t contain enough blood cells it leads to the person becoming:

  • Tired and breathless
  • Painful muscles and joints
  • Stomach cramps
  • Palpitations (irregular heartbeat)

TREATMENT

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Place them in a warm bath
  • Call 999 / 112 if the pain is too great
