Meningitis

This is an infection of the meninges (protective membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord), caused by bacteria or a virus.

Symptoms in young children include:

  • Severe headaches
  • Vomiting
  • High temperature (38°C or higher)
  • Stiff neck & sensitivity to light
  • Distinctive skin rash (not always present)

Symptoms in babies differ with them becoming:

  • Floppy and unresponsive
  • Stiff with febrile convulsions
  • Irritable with unusual crying
  • Vomiting or a loss of appetite
  • Very sleepy with a reluctance to wake up
  • Swelling to the fontanelle (soft part of the head)

TREATMENT

They need immediate medical treatment so either transport them to hospital or call 999 / 112.
